Match Result: South Africa won by 104 runs
S Sinha: “Bavuma did exactly the right thing in giving enough play to the spinners as well in this sort of a game to find the necessary rhythm under the conditions and get cracking for the matches ahead.”
It was always going to be one-sided after Rossouw and de Kock teed off at the start of the day. Bavuma’s early loss turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the two southpaws smashed the Bangladeshi bowlers to all parts of the SCG. They didn’t have a clue, the 22-minute rain break didn’t help them one bit and they were left gasping for breath, as the two batters smashed them all over the park. The last 5 overs came as a slight breather, but they were still left to chase down 206. They needed a big start, Soumya Sarkar promised one with a 17-run opening over off Kagiso Rabada, but that was as good as it got. Anrich Nortje’s pace was too hot to handle and Shamsi helped himself to some confidence-boosting wickets. Only 4 batters got to double digits and none could top Litton Das’s 34
Rillee Rossouw is the Player of the Match for his 109
Bangladesh was never in the chase except for the first two overs, at which stage they were 26 without loss. The slide began in the next over, and Anrich Nortje completed what he had started, ending with 4 for 10. Shamsi too capitalized on the mountain of a score – courtesy of Rossouw’s career-best 109 – to get a confidence-boosting 3 for 20, as South Africa rolled Bangladesh over for less than half of what they had scored.
